Portrait Shoot Plan

I plan to shoot my friend because I know she will work with me and be flexible with poses and things I want her to do. I plan to do it on the veloway because it's easy, close to where she lives and the setting is simple, natural and pretty. To make this successful by following the rules such as interesting angles and rule of thirds. I will also make sure I have perfect lighting and the right settings. Finally I will make sure to take lots of picture because I don't want to have to turn them in and realize I didn't get good enough photos and have it be too late to take more so I will prepare and take many pictures.

Casual Portraits

I chose this photo because of all the colors and the close up angle so you can see all the details of the subject's face. Also it has extreme emotions and makes the photo more interesting.
I chose this photo because of the simplicity of the background and the romance expressed in the photo. Also it breaks some of the photography rules because its not following rule of thirds.

Photography Self Portait

I chose this one because its candid and I like it because there is emotion but not  a lot so it's a very simple picture capturing the beauty of simplicity.

I chose this one because it showed a depression, maturity and seriousness in the photo. I like it because of the gloominess and calming vibe the photo gives off.

Environmental Portraits

I like this picture because of the colors and the repetition and simplicity of the background. I chose it because it is a very candid shot and follows a lot of the portrait rules.

I liked this because the color scheme and the passion and interest portrayed in the photo. I chose it because even though it's not showing her face, it still shows emotion.

Self-Portait Tips

6. Shoot Candidly

Sometimes posed shots can look somewhat…. posed. Some people don’t look good in a posed environment and so switching to a candid type approach can work.
Photograph your subject at work, with family or doing something that they love. This will put them more at ease and you can end up getting some special shots with them reacting naturally to the situation that they are in. You might even want to grab a longer zoom lens to take you out of their immediate zone and get really paparazzi with them.
I find that this can particularly work when photographing children.

10. Take a Series of Shots

Switch your camera into ‘burst’ or ‘continuous shooting’ mode and fire off more than one shot at a time.
In doing this you create a series of images that could be presented together instead of just one static image.
This technique can work very well when you’re photographing children – or really any active subject that is changing their position or pose in quick succession.

18. Experiment with Subject Expressions

In some portraits it is the expression on the face of your subject that makes the image.
Get your subject to experiment with different moods and emotions in your image. Play with extreme emotions

ISO

low ISO

high ISO

1. For sporting events you can get movement captured but if you wanted the lighting at night then it would be blurry.
2. Some suggestions for low ISO is to stick to the lowest ISO on your camera so you can get the highest quality pictures.
3. Suggestions for high ISO are to raise it if you need better lighting.

Camera Settings:
ISO setting: 1600

Shutter Speed

(1/6400 second) high shutter speed

(1/200 second) slow shutter speed

Part One-Reasonable Light
a) low
b) low
c) high
d) high
e) high
f) high

Part Two- Bad Lighting
a) low
b) low
c) high
d) low
e) low
f) low

Aperture priority- you set aperture, camera chooses shutter speed
Shutter priority- you set shutter speed, camera chooses aperture
manual- must manually select both the shutter speed and aperture

Aperture

F2.8

F16

1. The aperture can relate to the iris of the eye.
2. The smaller aperture, the larger the f-stop, the higher the aperture, the smaller the f-stop.
3. The depth of field has an impact by affecting the focus and sharpness of the image, and by adjusting the aperture, you can decide how much is in focus and what is in focus.

Emotions Through Photos

1. I thought the photos towards the beginning were really good at showing love and happiness between the couple. Even after it got depressing and showed her story of cancer, the vibe of the love between them never ever disappeared at all until the very end.

2. This relates to this sequence of photos very well because the photos were not something they just took while it was happening. The photos are the photographers story and represents the emotion going on during the story.

3. I maybe could if I tried really hard, but this sequence or story was something that came natural and seemed as if it just came to him and he had a very good sense of emotion and artistic ability and his photos displayed that very well and that seems hard to achieve.

4. If I were to write Angelo a letter I would tell him his photos were beautiful and very emotional. I would also tell him his photos captured a true story of loss and love very stunning and meaningful and that he captured the pain of hurt of many people in the world and many people go through the same situation. He represented the hurt of many people and was able to capture it in images and help everyone else understand the emotion in an event like this.

Abandoned Theme Parks

1. I would want to go to Prypiat, Ukraine. This place looked really interesting because everything was rusted but still contained color unlike the other ones. Also the first picture, really drew my attention because there was snow covering the ground, but in the middle of it was a ferris wheel and the simplicity of it was really pretty in my opinion. All the pictures had the effect that it had been abandoned for years but also looks like it was used yesterday the way everything was frozen in time.

3. Five other interesting places would be a jungle, a busy city like New York City, any famous landmark in an odd place, underwater, and a place with not as great technology such as Africa.

5. I chose this because the jungle is very colorful. You could get many types of photos here. You could trees, water, plants, growth, death and lots of types of animals. I chose this because you could so many type of pictures like the ones listed before because of the diversity and life of the location.

6. I think it would be highly impossible for me to get photos here because of expenses and distance to travel. Also the jungle is a very dangerous place and one can get easily hurt there. As far as equipment, guesses are, you would need a lot.

Africa Photos Reflection

1. My reaction to his photos was that his photos were stunning. It was really pretty and captured the natural beauty and peace of Africa. Almost everyone is aware of the damage there and I think these photos really move you. They make you realize what we've done to the Earth and just really move and you want to do everything to help.
This is a photo of a line of elephants and I chose this one because it shows the unity of the herds as they march together. Also it shows the beauty of Africa with the rolling clouds above and the endless, flat fields.

The biggest rule I see is Rule of Thirds because the elephant is not centered and is to the right. Also I think there is leading lines because of the lines of elephants which causes the eye to look across the whole photo of elephants.

He photographs on medium-format black and white film without telephoto or zoom lenses. This is important because with this you can see the background and show the beauty compared to if he wasn't using it, it would focus on the subject and not capture the beauty around the  subject.

His reason for taking photos is to show the world in photography, the beauty of Africa as it fades away and capture it before it is permanently gone. His hopes is to get everyone moved and wanting to make a difference.

"In 1995 I first drove the main road from Nairobi down through southern Kenya to Arusha in northern Tanzania. Along the way, in completely unprotected areas, I was giraffes, zebras, gazelles, impalas, and wildebeest. A few months ago, just 13 years later, I made the same drive. I didn't see a single wild animal the entire four-hour drive."

Great Black and White Photographers Pt. 3

1. When I first saw White's photos, I thought he portrayed things we could see on a normal basis and photographed it on a very artistic level.

Photo #1
I see dirt and bugs and an old tree twisted in a natural knot. I can see the small new forms of life and buds of shrubs sprouting near the old tree. I see crevices in it as if water itself sculpted it.
I smell the old bark peeling off the tree and wet soil that provides nutrients for the old tree. I can smell natural mold and mildew that had built up over the years on the tree.
I hear the few leaves left rustle in the gentle breeze. I hear the squirrels burrowing into as their claws scratch the many holes of the aged tree.
I taste dust rain that has built up through the carved wood. I taste rain and wet soil from the previous refreshing rain that sprinkled the tree and its home.
I feel the soft bark as it peels away under my touch. I feel the crisp grass beneath my feet as it crunches beneath my feet.

I see rays of sunlight dancing through the faded white curtains. I see the sheer cloths hanging from the window sway in the gentle wind.
I smell the dust that has built a small layer over everything in the house and claimed it as it's own. I smell the rotting wood that makes the structure of the old house.
I hear the planks of soft wood under my feet squeak and creak as I step over them. I hear birds chirping and singing through the open window.
I taste the dirt, dust and mildew dancing though the thick air.
I feel the warm rays of sun bounce off my skin and wood planks bordering the window made of thin, yellowed and cracked glass.

A way I would like to portray this photographer is a poster. This can be very artistic and eye-catching, just like White's photography.

Photo Mural Project

1.  A theme I think would be interesting is students taking advantage of school and learning. It wouldn't just be kids sitting at desk words doing book work, but things like clubs, electives, volunteering or events outside of school and students making the most of their education.

2.  I think a variety of cameras would work but mainly phones since it would be easy to have with and easier to use but, if you wanted better quality photos, then the cameras could be necessary.

3. Somewhere where everyone would walk by at one point of the day and not hidden somewhere in the back of a hallway. I think the courtyard would be a great place because everyone is there at one point and also the lighting is good outside.

Peer Academic Shoot Critique

http://jamiesphotojournalism.blogspot.com

Two things that they did good is the framing rule because it was very appealing to look at. Another thing is that all the rules were followed very nicely and it was obvious what the rule was.

One thing I would've improved is that try to vary the photos you get because they were all kids working. Yes, it's hard because not much was going on in academics but there could have been creative ways to show it like different angles.

Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique

1. The biggest challenge was to multitask and get good academic activity, the 5 rules and a good quality all at the same time in each of the photos.

2. My biggest technical aspect was focus. An example of me doing this was the framing photo because it was hard to get it to focus in on the classroom and not the window.

3. I wish I would've stayed in classrooms longer to get more content and so I would have more options when choosing a photo for each rule.

4. The things I would've kept the same are my balance and simplicity and not just taking pictures in classrooms but in the hallways too.

5. I think the easiest one will be leading lines because there are many lines in classrooms and hallways and buildings in general.

6. The hardest is framing because its hard to find an interesting subject and a frame in the same area and it's hard to get the exact focus and lighting you want.

7. The rule I don't understand the most is Balance and a way I could learn more about is look for definitions and more specifically, examples.

Academic Shoot and Reflection

Framing
1. I think the rule of framing was followed nicely but the quality of the photo is not as good as it could've been.
2. The subject of this photo is the students working in the classroom.
3. Kind of because there is a lot going on in the picture but's clear that's the subject is the kids.
4. Something I would've done to improve the photo is try to focus more through the window because the photo is awkwardly focused.

Leading Lines
1. This photo has leading lines but the lines don't really lead to anything.
2. The students working on both sides of the photo is the subject of photo.
3. I don't think the subject is very obvious because it took me a while to figure it out and usually leading lines are used to lead to the subject, but in this they didn't lead to anything.
4. The thing I would've changed is have a subject at the end of the desks like a student speaking or something because the lines aren't leading to anything.

Rule of Thirds
1. The rule was followed greatly because it's obvious that she is in the bottom left corner and not towards the center and not on any of the invisible lines.
2 . The subject is the girl working on the project.
3. The subject is obvious because nothing is going on somewhere else in the photo.
4. There is nothing I would change except have better lighting because outside of the windows, it's very bright.

Simplicity
1. This rule was followed greatly because since the photo is from above, there is nothing else to distract the eye.
2. The subject is the boy working on the project.
3. It's obvious because the boy is the only action in the photo and everything around him is gray.
4. There is nothing I would change about this photo.

Balance
1. This rule was followed nicely because there is an equal amount of things going on on both sides of the photo and it's not uneven.
2. The subject is everyone working on the computers.
3. I think it's obvious because there is nothing else going on in the photo.
4. Since the rule was followed nicely, there isn't anything I would change about it.
