Fashion Photography

CHANGES MADE IN THE VIDEOS

1. The changes made in this video are they removed pimples, cleared skin and blotchiness. They changed her face shape with makeup and changed every feature of her face with makeup. They also curled and changed her hair. With photoshop, they made her neck longer, darker hair, and bigger eyes.

2. In the second video, they added tons of makeup, curled hair and long extensions. On photoshop, they enlarged her eyes, changed the face shape, made her thinner, have longer legs, longer neck, and lighter hair and skin.

3. In the third video, they made ever part of her body thinner, larger head and breast, less wrinkles in arms and legs, changed the lighting and added more hair.

QUESTIONS

4. It is absolutely not ethically acceptable to make these kinds of changes through photoshop. One of the biggest problems in society today is girls and their self consciousness and when these kinds of pictures are on the cover of magazines, no wonder they feel bad about themselves. If they knew the truth behind these extremely edited photos, then most likely girls would have more confidence with themselves. Also for the people being edited, this could make them feel bad also. They must feel like they are not pretty enough and do not reach the standards of todays society because they have been edited until the original person looks like nothing like the person in the final product.

5. In my opinion, there are very little circumstances where it would be more unethical. Obviously only changing a couple things like acne or lighting is acceptable because the person being edited would be okay with that. For example, if I were to post a picture on instagram of me, I would most likely change the lighting and possibly get rid of acne, but this is okay. However, changing someone personality completely, is unacceptable.

6. Some changes that are okay, are lighting, acne or oiliness in someone's face. But changing proportions and appearance completely is not okay.

7. Although, fashion photography and photojournalism both use skills of photography and equipment, there are many differences. Photojournalism is the photography of many things and the list would go on and on but most of the time, photos are edited very minimally. However, fashion photography is the photography of subjects related to fashion and clothing and if the subject is a person, you would find it common to edit the person more than in photojournalism.

8. Photojournalism compared to reality is very ethical. It photographs the beauty of nature, people and the world and tells stories through photos. Fashion photography is not as ethical, because even though many photos are probably fine, there are many that edit people until it is unacceptable.

9. I believe you showed us these videos because they showed how unacceptable photoshop can be used for and the dangers and maturity needed for Photoshop. You showed us this because even though photoshop can be used in very good ways, it can be used in bad ways also as proven in the video.

10. The reason that none of the videos were guys are, like I said in Question 1, one of the biggest problems in society is the need girls have for the perfection in others eyes. As of now, this is not really a problem for guys because there aren't as many of these photoshop edits to inspire the self consciousness in them over themselves like there are for girls.

Best Covers

MAGAZINE TIPS --- BLOG #1

1. The cover photo should be very appealing to look at and unique.

2. The screen is the wrong size and would obviously look more accurate if you were to have the actual thing in your hands compared to if you were to have it on the computer.

3. Colors may appear brighter and glow more on the computer because the screen glows, so the actual thing may turn out more dull.

4. The computer lacks scale, so you would have to guess on the accurate font size.

5. The cover should be arousing curiosity and make someone just glancing at it, more interested to read it and spend more time looking at it.

MY FAVORITE --- BLOG #3

Bloomberg Businessweek, December 2–8, J Crew: Teaching the World to Dress American
(Photo illustration by Justin Metz)
"It’s hard to break through with a story about J. Crew—everyone wears it so it has become visual noise. So for our cover story about how J. Crew is expanding overseas, and going after a more fashion-forward demographic, we decided to have Will and Kate, symbols of all that is wholesome and holy and English, posing as J. Crew catalog models on our cover."

Some things I would critique are to make the background not white. I love the simple color behind because it brings more attention to the people, but since the girl's pants are white, it looks off balance. Another reason it looks uneven, also related to the pants, is the coloring. Everything else, like the text and clothing are dark compared to the background, so they fill the photo and stand out but again the pants blend in with background and throw off the balance. What is communicated through the people is focused on the clothing and happiness towards the clothes. The way they did this was have bright colors and happy faces and have a simple background so that the reader's eye is focused towards the clothing. Other than that, I like the simplicity of it and how it's not busy and layering of his head over the text and finally the natural faces and its not fake smile.

MAGAZINES PART II --- BLOG # 4

1. Early Magazine Covers: Early magazine covers were commonly inspired by book covers. The covers at this point were very simple and did not contain many elements. Most ones you would find at this time would contain a title, a picture that drew the attention and a bar code. Much of the focus for the cover was focused on the image.

2. The Poster Cover: This picture style was very focused on the image. As said in the title, it resembled a poster. If there was wording, there wouldn't be much to read, for example a sentence or a title. This style heavily relied on visual imagery. Therefore the photos had to be very eye catching in order to bring attention towards the magazine.

3. Pictures Married to Type: This magazine style now incorporated both pictures and words. This would include a photo that attracted the reader along with phrases of words that brought even more interest to the cover. Many of the photos were portraits. Also the text did not distract the picture and worked its way around it, therefore the two elements worked together.

4. In the Forest of Words: This style popped up in the 21st century. Many words and phrases were now added to the cover which made readers and viewers interested as to what was in the magazine. Although the photos were still well thought out, the text was more effective and productive as to attention grabbing. The creators now believed the text was just as important as the image.

American Soldier Slideshow

The most powerful image is 72 because through the separation and struggles Ian and family had to deal, they finally got rewarded in being reunited and the happiness and joy is extremely obvious in the photo and the emotion is strong.

At Home in Denver: This is #1 to #7.
At Basic Training: This is #8 to #50.
In Iraq: This is #51 to #70.
Back in Denver: This is #71 to #82.

I believe the last set, back in denver, is the most powerful set. It shows the power of friends, family and home has on someone and how important it is. Even after a long time span, Ian still misses his family and didn't stop for one minute. It is obvious that these things in that set of photos mean a lot to Ian.

These photos work together and tell a story by showing the maturing and development of a man through war, love, family and independence. One effect of it being a story is the time span and the photos taken over time like a story and they all can relate to the one before it and over a series oh photos it shows change of a person.

The photos in which Ian is the main subject is present tense.

Captions can enhance photographs by creating more focus on the subject, creating more interest towards the photo and providing more information to the viewer.

Ian says goodbye to his family as he leaves for a very long time and everyone gets very emotional. Ian had planned to move to New York to live with his girlfriend and was not going to be able to visit his family that much.

Ian and many other boys and men stand and wait, ready to practice for joining the army. This morning ritual, had easily become part of their daily routine, for it had been going on for the past 2 months.

Ian and girlfriend wait to get the final words of their new marriage. Both members of the relationship wanted a more traditional wedding but they had lacked the money to make that kind of event happen. Either way, they were very happy they had finally been united in love.
